Ceony Twill arrives at the cottage of Magician Emery Thane with a broken heart. Having graduated at the top of her class from the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, Ceony is assigned an apprenticeship in paper magic despite her dreams of bespelling metal. And once she’s bonded to paper, that will be her only magic…forever.

Yet the spells Ceony learns under the strange yet kind Thane turn out to be more marvelous than she could have ever imagined—animating paper creatures, bringing stories to life via ghostly images, even reading fortunes. But as she discovers these wonders, Ceony also learns of the extraordinary dangers of forbidden magic.

An Excisioner—a practitioner of dark, flesh magic—invades the cottage and rips Thane’s heart from his chest. To save her teacher’s life, Ceony must face the evil magician and embark on an unbelievable adventure that will take her into the chambers of Thane’s still-beating heart—and reveal the very soul of the man.

I got this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, none of my thoughts are altered by that.

I think this book was something someone would read if they were just getting in to fantasy. It takes place in a fantasy world but there isn’t too much of the powerful power and words that aren’t actually in English. The characters were great in this book and it was a great short and sweet read. One thing I also liked about this book was that there wasn’t forced action because when a book is a short book..cramming in action is not the way to go. If you want a fantasy read this is for you!

Woo this book was good within the 200 pages it was writtin in, even if half the book was about Ceony in Thane’s heart. It literally gave us an insight of Emery’s life..and his heart. I’m actually really surprised how he was once married to Lira, it’s just weird I guess. I mean the good guy was once married with the bad guy. It’s also kind of cool as well..but it’s still weird. So the world in this book isn’t very WOW THAT’S SO DIFFERENT, I HAVEN’T HEARD OF THAT BEFORE! Although the different binders of elements. The paper folders and smelters..I’ve never read anything like that before and I have to admit it’s pretty cool.

The characters in this book we’re very enjoyable and I liked the diversity within the characters. Lira was the clever villain, Thane was the wiser one, and Ceony was the main character that still had lots to learn. I feel like even though Lira is a totle** jerk she still has a good side. I really am looking forward to book 2 because I really wanna know what happens with Thane and Ceony. It’s not like I’m expecting them to get together in the next book…okay yah maybe I am expecting a little to come out of book 2; hopefully there is. I’m sorry even with the age difference they would be so cute together! Thane and Lira’s past are also very HOMG…LET ME SIT AND TAKE THIS INFORMATION IN REAL QUICK. I think they would have been so great together..if she didn’t  do the illegal magic. I just wish we had know how they met and everything.

I thought ending battle was pretty cool. Other than the fact that she just got out of Thane’s heart and I think it’s pretty cool how most of the battle Ceony made paper weapons and stuff.

I don’t know about you, but I though it was awesome and I’m really excited for the next book.
